Small but full of extraordinary beauties, this tiny coastal town holds a great myth, too. We, Kaş lovers, are protected by the Sleeping Giant lying on the rocky, steep hills of the town. There are two different stories about these rocks which look exactly like a sleeping giant lying on his side and looking out to the Greek island of Kastellorizo which is located right across Kaş.
The first one is that he’s Prometheus who’s punished by Zeus, so chained and left there for an eagle to come and take a piece of his liver each day. Prometheus is so mission oriented that he continues to protect the town even in that condition. 😉 Since he did not die and Zeus has forgiven him and let him ascend to the Gods’ state, I prefer to embrace the other story.
According to that romantic one Sleeping Giant is a man who has a soul mate residing in Kastellorizo Island. They fell apart with an earthquake but still looking at each other from the opposite lands and symbolizing the eternal love. The structure of the rocks complement each other just like the two halves of an apple… or the lovers. So I think this Sleeping Giant is a very appropriate Love symbol for Kaş. I also see him as a super hero who protects love and the town of love, Kaş.
The myth is very romantic so far but rumour has it that the Sleeping Giant will wake up and meet his soul mate one day. Oh my God! Please stay asleep and in love with each other forever, ok? 😉
You can arrange a trekking tour or a horse tour from the Kaş Horse Farm in the Çukurbağ Village to the Sleeping Giant and watch the beautiful view of Kaş from the eyes of our super hero. Maybe you can wave at the lover of him in the island across, too. By the way Kastellorizo is the closest Greek island to Turkey. And it’s the tiniest and cutest one of them. You can reach the Neighboring Island with a very short boat trip. It takes only 25 minutes to be there. And when you look at Kaş and Kastellorizo from a bird’s eye view they look like an eyebrow and an eye. What a complementary couple! Isn’t it like living in a fairy tale to think that they are somehow protected by mythical lovers?
So if we are done with the fairy tales and stories and myths let’s come back to the history of the town.
