I have good news and bad news. I’ll start with the bad news: unfortunately Kaş is not like the Aegean towns of Turkey in terms of fish and greens. Good news is that we have many other tasty and natural food alternatives as follows:
1) Do not miss the opportunity to wander and shop around the farmer’s market on Fridays. Besides fruits and vegetables, you can also buy a variety of cheese, olives, eggs, olive oil, tomato paste, noodles, etc. You will be amazed when you see the variety on the stall of Cheesemonger Emin. Also if you’re there at the lunchtime, you can eat pancake and yogurt drink (ayran) or boiled corn from the stalls at the entrance.
2) Uçarlar Manav is almost as good as the farmer’s market for grocery shopping and open seven days a week. At the end of the holiday you can buy some of its long lasting goods like lemons, garlic and walnut with you back home. This is the best place to buy fruits and vegetables to your home in Kaş.
3) If you are a meat lover, you will love the Likya Butcher. The name may sound like a horror movie but don’t be afraid, it’s a safe place to buy meat and poultry. 😉 It’s located right across the Uçarlar Manav. Make sure you stop over here before the evening barbecue.
4) A few local fish species are available but they are not worthy of note. However, you can find a few shops in the city center where you can buy fresh fish coming from the Fethiye Fish Market.
5) There is a small cooperative store called Elmisko on the same street where the fish sellers are lined. The shop owners are a bit sour faced but do not deprive yourself from the tasty dairy products just because of that. Be realistic: good humor won’t appease you but the tulum cheese, aged kasar cheese, butter, farmer’s cheese and eggs you buy from there will make your stomach happy.
6) There’s a little stand selling natural products on the road to Küçükçakıl which is called Doğal Anne Eli. They sell their products on Instagram, too. They have very tasty natural sundried soup mixes, carob syrup, variety of jams, vinegar, tomato paste, pomegranate syrup, sage, etc. And this time the stand owner is so welcoming and good humored, too. You’ll love it!
There are many other places as candidates to be a part of your life in Kaş, such as Muhtar Supermarket, Likya Çiftliği (Likya Farm), herbalists, Eflatun Farm products. So we are not that bad at all. We won’t go hungry, I guess. Do you agree with me?
